‘I’m not from where they come from’
Senator Joe Manchin on Monday was right behind decision to “squelch negotiations over President Joe Biden’s Build Back Better agenda, claiming that he was at his ‘smart’ end point in negotiations with the White House,” NBC News report.
The senator explained himself in a lengthy radio interview on West Virginia Metro News, claiming that although he “didn’t blame anyone” for the collapse of the negotiations, Democrats may not realize how staunch he is in his stance. “We were philosophically far apart,” he said of the progressives.
“I know where they are and I know what they can and can’t do. They never realize it because they think, surely with God, we can move a person, surely surely we can beat one,” Manchin continued. “Well, guess what? I’m from West Virginia. I’m not from where they come from, and they can just beat the survivors and think they’ll submit, weird.”
The senator said he had achieved “smart results” in the negotiations, and that the White House knew the “real reason” he had to pull out.
When he was mentioned in detail, he did so vaguely, explaining that “it was driven by the staff. I understand the staff, it’s not the president, it’s the staff. And they drove it. some things and they bring up some things that are completely inexcusable and they know what it is and that’s it.”
He also criticized Democrats for approaching legislation “as if you had 55 or 60 senators who were Democrats and you could do whatever you wanted”, saying he only progressed to the mediation process in the first place to withdraw the 2017 tax cuts.
“I want to hope there are still Democrats who think like I do,” he said, but if not, “they’re going to have to push me where they want to.”
