DEYNA CASTELLANOS is Manchester City Women’s first major signing of the summer after the departure of five international stars.
The 23-year-old Venezuelan striker, who will wear City’s number 10 shirt, has sealed a three-year move after two and a half years at Atletico Madrid.
The striker’s change to the defending champion of the Conti Cup ended months of speculation about a change.
Atletico’s Laia Aleixandri, 21, has also been linked with a move to Academy Stadium.
Castellanos impressed for the Spanish club, scoring 23 goals in 58 games and helping them to a triumph in the 2021 Spain Women’s Super Cup.
Speaking of her Manchester move, Castellanos said: “It’s a big step for me in my career and I can’t wait for it to start.
“When you look at all the facilities in City, it’s just amazing.
“I believe the club will help me improve as a player and I hope I can help Manchester City too.
“I found the style of football that the team plays very attractive.
“I feel like I can fit in very well here while also being challenged to develop and grow.

“I chose the No. 10 jersey because that’s the number I played in college and I scored some great goals in it.
“Hopefully I’ll be able to create many more good memories at City with that.”
Castellanos, captain of Venezuela, played for US college football club Florida State Seminoles in 2016 before joining Atletico in 2020.
The forward won the Golden Boot at the 2014 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
And she was nominated for the FIFA gong for Best Female Player three years later, along with Lieke Martens and Carli Lloyd.
City boss Gareth Taylor said: “She’s an incredibly exciting player.
“Her inclusion in the FIFA Best shortlist at just 18 speaks volumes about her impact on the game at such a young age and what a talent she is.”
City could be set for more summer transfer activity after the departure of Scotland ace Caroline Weir and Lionesses stars Georgia Stanway, Jill Scott and Lucy Bronze.
Canada striker Janine Beckie sealed a move to US club Portland Thorns in April, while City’s veteran goalkeeper Karen Bardsley will retire in May.
And the Citizens also separated from goalkeeper Karima Taieb.
It is reported that the club could try to add Spanish defender Aleixandri to their ranks before the summer transfer window closes.
The player helped Atletico kick City out of the Champions League for two consecutive seasons in 2018 and 2019.
