Man Utd transfer news LIVE: Frenkie de Jong deal in January, Cristiano Ronaldo STAYING – Ten Hag, Sergino Dest update

MANCHESTER UNITED believe they can still sign Frenkie de Jong but it is unlikely to happen this window.

The Red Devils are reportedly ready to go back in for the Barcelona star in January.

Meanwhile Cristiano Ronaldo is to STAY at Old Trafford past the summer transfer window, boss Erik ten Hag has confirmed.

The Portuguese star had been linked with a move away from Old Trafford all summer, but Ten Hag has now confirmed that he will NOT be leaving in the next 48 hours.

Ten Hag said in his press conference today: “It is clear. We need quality players.

“You need more players to cover all the games to keep the consistency going.”

And United appear likely to keep hold of Aaron Wan-Bissaka rather than bringing in Barcelona’s Sergino Dest as a replacement.

Elsewhere, Martin Dubravka will become David De Gea’s back-up goalkeeper at Old Trafford after making his switch from Newcastle.

  • Fans keen to bring back flop

With options becoming more and more limited due to their spending to date, one player United fans are calling for the club to re-sign is Memphis Depay.

Having failed in a previous stint at Old Trafford, many have claimed the player has developed and grown since his departure after blossoming at Lyon before signing for Barcelona.

With the Catalan club having signed Robert Lewandowski this summer, the Dutch forward has fallen well down the pecking order at Camp Nou.

Looking to clear wages off their books, Barca could be open to a loan move also.

  • Blues look to target United starlet

Birmingham City are in talks with Man Utd in a bid to sign 22-year-old Netherlands midfielder Tahith Chong on a permanent transfer.

Chong spent some of last season on loan to the Championship side, with 20 appearances, scoring one goal during his loan spell.

Having only made five senior appearances for United, the player may be keen to ply his trade elsewhere for regular first-team football.

  • ten Hag sends Wan-Bissaka message

The Man Utd manager has spoken about the future of the £45m signing amid the current form of Diogo Dalot.

ten Hag stated that competition is key in all positions and in this instance it is for Wan-Bissaka to dislodge Dalot.

The Dutchman went on to say how the ex-Crystal Palace full back is impressing with his efforts in training and he is happy with his output.

  • Antony missing link in attack

Erik ten Hag has spoken about the potential that £85m signing Antony will bring to his Man Utd squad.

As a left-footed winger, he would add a different option for a squad that is teeming with right-footed wingers.

ten Hag would look to play the winger on the right-hand side, offering something different with his ability to cut inside onto his strongest foot.

The manager was a bit coy about discussions as he reiterated that despite agreeing a fee with Ajax the transfer is ‘still not done’.

He then went on to say ‘It’s difficult to talk about a player we haven’t signed. We want to do it. He’s one with the right fighting spirit.’

  • Is Dutchman really happy with CR7?

Erik ten Hag must be fed up of fielding questions about the future of Cristiano Ronaldo by now, having only been in the position for a matter of months.

While the words coming from the United manager say he is more than happy to keep Ronaldo, it all comes across like someone being asked if they like their girlfriend…….in front of her.

Not that the manager is going to come out and slate one of their prized possessions but the next 24 hours will truly see if ten Hag is a man of his word.

  • You don’t win anything with kids

Erik ten Hag looked towards the youth during his first pre-season tour this summer and after matches like this, he will be keeping an eye on the more talented players in the U21 squad.

Looking at promoting them to the first team at some point in the future, or even including them in the squad for the UEFA Europa League.

Here are six players to watch out for:

    • Charlie McNeill
    • Kobbie Mainoo
    • Bjorn Hardley
    • Zidane Iqbal
    • Alejandro Garnacho
    • Omari Forson
  • Ronnie’s deadline day drama

While Erik ten Hag has played down any chance of Cristiano Ronaldo leaving Man Utd before the window closes, reports suggest if he is going to go anywhere it may well now be Chelsea who are the only club in the frame.

Todd Boehly met with Jorge Mendes in the summer and club officials are supposed to be keen on signing the Portuguese forward despite manager Thomas Tuchel not being keen on the player.

  • Red Devils to end ‘perfect start’

Arsenal travel to Old Trafford this weekend having extended their 100% start to the Premier League campaign.

The Gunners have won all five games so far this season but their trip to Manchester will be their toughest test of the season so far.

Having bounced back from their poor start with two back-to-back wins, ten Hag will be looking to continue the improvement by stripping Arsenal of their unbeaten start in the league.

The game will prove as a stern test for both sides to see where they are in their personal transitions under new management.

  • Big buys and young guys

While fans will be happy with the investment the club has made in the transfer window with the signings of Casemiro and Antony it does pose a question that Sir Alex Ferguson would not have received very well at all.

Is there any room for academy players to develop at Old Trafford any more?

The struggles of Dean Henderson to command a first-team place despite his success out on loan and poor form of David De Gea does suggest the recruitment policy is preventing youngsters breaking into the team.

With James Garner having to move on to pastures new to find some football, you do have to wonder whether United have scope to let these players develop within the first team squad.

Success is a necessity for such a big club but without having an academy feeding into the first team, it can prove a very costly dream to chase.

  • Garner signs for Toffees

Everton have agreed a deal with Man Utd to sign midfielder James Garner in a deal for an initial fee of £9m which could rise to £15.5m with add-ons.

The player impressed at Notts Forest last season and attracted the interest of several Premier League clubs.

While the deal does include a sell-on fee, it is believed there is no clause for a buy-back option.

  • ten Hag suggests work is done

The Man Utd coach has spoken about the work the club has done in the transfer window, almost reflecting on it in the past tense as to suggest that all their business is concluded.

Having spent £227m the manager also outlined how the paperwork has been done for Ajax winger but the transfer is still not yet complete.

ten Hag said ‘I think we’ve strengthened the squad, that is clear. It’s about development of the team, the individuals, to get this team stronger and have more consistency and bring more quality. That is what me and my coaches have to do.

  • UNITED we stand

With tomorrow’s game kicking off hours before the transfer window is due to close, the biggest thing United fans would want more than anything is harmony within the squad.

Players commenting on wanting to leave, not happy with their game time or the new manager’s tactics are not making for positive vibes within the squad currently.

The fans expect players to be honoured to don the shirt, willing to work hard if dropped from the team and just as happy to see the side win rather than focussing on their personal interests all too often.

Hopefully the closure of the transfer window should put pay to some of the gripes within the squad.

  • Leicester vs Man Utd preview

Manchester United will be eager to build on their winning run when they take on Leicester City this Thursday – which is also transfer deadline day.

The Red Devils managed to scrape a gruelling 1-0 win against Southampton at St. Mary’s last weekend.

And the fans were treated to more good news having seen their club officially wrap up a deal for Brazilian sensation Antony.

However, Erik Ten Hag will be aware that his side will be in for a tough test against a Leicester side who are hungry to put their three points on the board.

But the Foxes could be slightly distracted by Wesley Fofana’s imminent departure to Chelsea and Arsenal’s continued speculation with midfield maestro Youri Tielemans.

  • Leicester vs Man Utd TOMORROW

Leicester City will roll out the red carpet for Manchester United TOMORROW.

It is scheduled to kick off at 8pm UK time.

This is also the same night that transfer window closes.

Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw when the sides last met in April earlier on this year.

  • Ten Hag admits to evolving window

The Man Utd manager has spoken about how the targets and aims of the club have changed as the season and transfer window progresses.

Not to be drawn on whether their recent spending was a knee-jerk reaction to the poor start they made to their campaign, the Dutch manager said how things will change due to availability, fees involved and whether the player is ‘gettable’.

With two wins from his last two games, ten Hag spoke about how they have strengthened well within the summer and are making positive moves in their transition under the new leadership.

  • Not the Dest

AC Milan are reportedly set to beat Man Utd to the transfer of Sergino Dest.

According to Sky in Italy, the Barcelona full-back is set to complete a deal to the Serie A giants.

The deal is said to be a one-year loan with an option to buy for £17million plus add ons.

  • Wan-Bissaka will stay, says Ten Hag

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has confirmed that Aaron Wan-Bissaka will be staying at Old Trafford.

He said: “Of course, Aaron is still here and we will keep him.

“This squad will go from September until minimum January. We will play with this squad this season.”

The right-back was attracting interest from West Ham and Crystal Palace but with Sergino Dest not on his way to Manchester, Wan-Bissaka will remain at the club.

  • Martinez forced move to Manchester

Lisandro Martinez squared up to an Ajax chief and told him “you’re a f***ing nobody” to force through his transfer, according to shock reports.

The Argentine defender joined Manchester United in a whopping £56million move this summer.

But respected Dutch publication De Telegraaf state the star – nicknamed ‘Butcher’ – took matters into his own hands to convince Ajax to sell.

The report claims he went nose to nose with technical director Gerry Hamstra at the Dutch club’s Johan Cruijff ArenA and demanded the green light for an exit.

It is then alleged he used the expletive towards Hamstra.

Martinez’s transfer to the Premier League on a five-year contract was confirmed just a matter of days after the alleged incident at the stadium.

  • Thumbs Up from Ron

Cristiano Ronaldo arrived at Man Utd’s training ground Carrington earlier today and was pictured giving a thumbs up on his way in.

The 37-year-old has been desperate to leave the club this summer but Erik ten Hag suggested he is now set to stay.

Ten Hag said: “It is clear, of course. But I just said we need quality players.

“You need more to cover all the games to keep the consistency going, that is what we strive for.”

  • Blast from the past

Tom Huddlestone came off the bench for Manchester United Under-21s last night – aged 35.

The Red Devils snapped up the former Tottenham midfielder on a free transfer earlier this month.

He has taken up a player-coach role with the United Academy.

And he came off the bench last night for the U21s in a 2-1 win over Carlisle in the EFL Trophy.

Competition rules allow two players over the age of 21 who made 40 or more senior appearances before 2019-20 to play.

Huddlestone also came off the bench for the U21s last week in the 2-2 drae with Fulham in the Premier League 2.

  • Sevilla sign Januzaj

Adnan Januzaj has joined Sevilla on a four-year deal.

The former Manchester United winger was a free agent before the Andalusian outfit snapped him up.

  • Saints last minute rush for Gakpo

Southampton are reportedly set to win the race for PSV Eindhoven star Cody Gakpo.

Radio Solent claim the Saints have beaten Manchester United and Arsenal to the Dutch winger after striking a £25million deal with his club.

Gakpo, 23, had been strongly tipped to move to England before tonight’s Dutch transfer deadline.

But Southampton have appeared from nowhere to snatch a deal at the last moment.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side are flying high after beating Chelsea 2-1 last night.

And they have now agreed a £25m deal with PSV for Gakpo’s signature.

  • More on Ronaldo bashing Harry

The Athletic report goes on to state “Ronaldo retorted to say he believed Maguire was part of the problem”.

Rangnick expressed he felt the conversation was inappropriate without Maguire, and some of the other players present apologised to the German boss subsequently.

Ronaldo’s representatives, Gestifute, were approached by The Athletic for comment – but they’re yet to respond.

With just a day left of the summer transfer window, Ronaldo is unlikely to get his wish of a transfer away from United.

  • Sensational Ron claims rock Old Trafford core

Cristiano Ronaldo called for Manchester United captain Harry Maguire to be “DEMOTED” to the bench and labelled the centre-back “part of the problem”, according to reports.

The 37-year-old’s return to Old Trafford has not gone to plan and tensions grew last season as United crossed the finish line in sixth position – missing out on Champions League football.

And details have emerged surrounding Ronaldo’s demands as the team faltered in February.

According to sensational reports in The Athletic, Ronaldo made line-up suggestions and stated who he felt was his ideal strike partner.

It has also been claimed Ronaldo and a cohort of senior players, including ex-United ace Paul Pogba and Raphael Varane approached then interim manager Ralf Rangnick to discuss these issues.

However, club captain Maguire was NOT present and in the meeting with Rangnick, Ronaldo called on the England centre-back to be DEMOTED to the bench.

  • Ten Hag press conference – Antony

Erik ten Hag has spoken to the media ahead of Man Utd’s game away at Leicester tomorrow night.

Firstly, he has revealed more about the signing of Antony from Ajax for £85million.

But he hinted that more signings may be incoming.

Ten Hag said: “There is an agreement between the clubs but the paperwork is not done, so I cannot go deep.

“We still need to strengthen the offensive department because we have many games to cover.”

We still need to strengthen the offensive department because we have many games to cover.
