The Reds’ head of transfers, Matt Judge, met with the Brazil international’s company Velasco earlier this year to discuss a potential summer deal.
The 24-year-old’s representatives are said to have demanded a substantial raise with his salary currently sitting at less than £5m a year.
The Brazilian will also come with release clauses in the region of £60m and £70m.
Ronaldo’s future at Old Trafford is in serious doubt after missing Sunday’s derby against rivals Manchester City.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has gone mad after it was announced on Friday that he had been dropped from interim coach Ralf Rangnick’s starting line-up against Man City.
The star forward then did not appear for a club meal on Saturday after his absence was attributed to a hip problem.

Instead, the Real Madrid legend is said to have flown home to Portugal.
The Portugal captain’s future at United depends largely on him but the club’s hierarchy will not stand in his way should he decide to leave in the summer.
The 37-year-old forward has scored a total of 15 goals and provided three assists in 31 matches this season.
