The current No. 1’s contract expires at the end of this season and if the Spaniard leaves United appear to want Costa to replace him.

He has a release clause worth £65m that Man Utd must trigger to force Porto to sack him.

Outlet Correio da Manha report that Sergio Conceicao’s team are not planning a sale in January as the player recently signed a new contract.

Costa penned the deal in November and kept him in Porto until 2027.

Erik ten Hag is impressed by his performances for Portugal at the World Cup.

Costa has also made 19 appearances for his club this season and has not missed a game in La Liga or the Champions League.

Also at the World Cup, he played for his country in every game before they were eliminated in the quarterfinals.

Man Utd have reportedly been scouting Costa for some time and so he is comfortable with the ball at his feet.

United are expected to be in touch with Porto officials soon.

Athletic Bilbao and Spain’s Unai Simon is reportedly an alternative.

The 25-year-old stopper was the national team’s first choice in recent years ahead of De Gea.

Simon has also caught the attention of Tottenham, who see him as a potential long-term option to replace Hugo Lloris.

Meanwhile, Yann Sommer has also been linked with a move to Old Trafford.
