Man Utd plot £25m transfer for Benfica striker Goncalo Ramos while Newcastle and Bayern Munich snoop

ERIK TEN HAG has his eye on Benfica ace Goncalo Ramos to bolster Manchester United’s firepower.

Ramos, 21, has scored eight goals in 12 games this season, prompting United to get in touch with their representatives.

He is valued at around £25m by Benfica, which United would not exceed – although the player reportedly has a £100m release clause.

The Portugal U21 star was linked with Newcastle in the last window when Eddie Howe was scouting for a striker – and he is also being pursued by Bayern Munich.

United boss Ten Hag doesn’t have a big transfer pot for January, however, having gone over budget this summer. But there is still recognized the urgent need for another striker.

Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford’s injuries have shown how short they are in this department, with Cristiano Ronaldo, 37, being their only recognized and fit forward.

Ramos scored in last season’s Champions League quarter-final second leg against Liverpool at Anfield.

And he started this season in spectacular fashion with a hat-trick against Denmark’s Midtjylland. In the league he has scored four goals and provided two assists in six appearances.

Ten Hag have been backed with £206.7million this summer – United’s biggest-ever spend in a single window.

His four buys, plus the free signing of Christian Eriksen, helped transform United after a horror opener in two games they lost to Brighton and Brentford.

Since then they have won four Premier League games in a trot – and inflicted their only defeat of the season on leaders Arsenal.

After losing their first Europa League group game to Spain’s Real Sociedad, United bounced back with a 2-0 away win against the Sheriff of Moldova last week.

And as a boost to the injury-plagued front, United are now hoping Rashford returns in time for next month’s derby at the Etihad.

The England striker suffered a muscle injury in the Arsenal win in early September and has not played since.

He sat out both Europa League games and was not called up in the Three Lions squad for the forthcoming Nations League games against Italy and Germany.

However, there is now confidence at Old Trafford that he will be ready to make the short trip to face Pep Guardiola’s champions on October 2.

And that would be a very welcome boost for Ten Hag – as the 24-year-old has scored in key wins against Liverpool and the Gunners.
