Liverpool were huge admirers of Fernandez, 21, ahead of his stellar performances in Qatar 2022.

But his performances in the Middle East have now convinced United boss Erik ten Hag he is the right man to bolster his own side.

As reported earlier this week, both teams will need to break the Premier League’s record transfer fee of £100million to enlist his services next month.

That’s because Benfica have no desire to sell him for anything less than his huge £105m release clause.

Now UOL Esporte claim United are ready to match that number – putting them ahead of their Anfield rivals in the transfer hunt.

The journalist of the publication Bruno Andrade adding that “discussions are ongoing” between all parties involved.

And it’s been reiterated that United will meet the whopping £105m asking price to avoid “any competition” from elsewhere.

Fernandez only joined Benfica from River Plate last summer but international captain Lionel Messi admitted he was not surprised that so many clubs are so keen on the World Cup’s Young Player of the Tournament.

He said: “Enzo doesn’t surprise me.

“I know him and see him train every day.

“He deserves it because he’s a spectacular player.”
