Manchester United defeated Tottenham 2-0 in a crucial clash at Old Trafford.
Fred opened the scoring just two minutes into the second half when his effort deflected Ben Davies from Spurs.
Bruno Fernandes sealed the three points for the hosts in the 69th minute.
Fred’s shot caught Eric Dier and was deflected out of the way by Fernandes, who beat Tottenham keeper Hugo Lloris with a fine strike.
Meanwhile, PSV Eindhoven star Cody Gakpo has reopened the door to a potential move to United after revealing he had held talks with the club over the summer.
Gakpo revealed he was “close” to a move to Old Trafford following transfer talks with Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag and confirmed he would “consider” a move.
The winger told The Times: “I was close to leaving, I spoke to Erik ten Hag at Manchester United a couple of times.
“In the end the deal didn’t go through, which was a shame for me and my development and because Manchester United is one of the biggest clubs in the world, but also for PSV because transferring a player to Manchester United is a good thing for the club.
“It ended about a week before the end of the transfer window and this week I had to decide whether to go to Leeds or Southampton. In the end I stayed but it was a stressful time.”
Gakpo added: “I’ve always said if I stay here it’s my childhood club. It’s not a punishment. I like being here, I want to win trophies here and do my best for the club.
“But if I had the chance to go to the Premier League or something, obviously I would have to consider that option. It was hectic for me at the time, but I recovered pretty quickly.”
And United Ten Hag will try to get club bosses to go after Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong again in January.
The Red Devils spent the summer chasing De Jong, 25, even agreeing a £72m deal with Barca.
However, the midfielder turned down the move and stayed at the Camp Nou despite a dispute with the Catalans over £17m in unpaid wages.
But according to Sport, the Netherlands international’s former Ajax boss has asked the Red Devils to come back for him in the new year.
After all, United will only decide on David de Gea’s future in the winter, claims Ten Hag.
De Gea’s contract expires in June but the Manchester giants have the option to extend it for another year.
Ten Hag said: “We haven’t made a decision about him but I can say I’m very happy with David de Gea as a goalkeeper.
“His first two performances of the season weren’t his best but when you see he brings us a lot on defense and gives stability.
“And as a person I like him, I’m really good to work with him, but first we’re going into winter and then we’ll talk about how [to] deal with such situations.
“At this moment we’re only thinking about performance, we still have a lot of games to play so I don’t want to be bothered by talks, we have to focus on football and performances, not negotiations. We have to.” do now.”
