MANCHESTER UNITED are reportedly pursuing Kalvin Phillips after scouting the Leeds midfielder for three years.
Old Trafford bosses have drawn up a shortlist of wanted men with Phillips, 26, at the top.
The Athletic claim Man Utd have started ‘exploring the prospect’ of a £50m transfer.
Phillips began to shine under Marcelo Bielsa when Leeds were in the Championship.
He played during their promotion to the Premier League and was called up for England ahead of Euro 2020.
And he’s been admired by United’s assistant manager Mike Phelan since he watched the midfielder dominate a Carabao Cup game against Salford City in 2019.
The Red Devils have made the national player a top target with Ralf Rangnick, who will move up to an advisory role in June.
Rangnick will support the move with Erik Ten Hag looking to make additions in the middle of the park.
They will most likely lose Paul Pogba, whose contract expires at the end of the season.
Players like Scott McTominay, Fred and Nemanja Matic also failed to stand out for the Old Trafford team.
Team-mate Patrick Bamford admitted last year there is a sticking point in Phillips’ move to the Yorkshire team’s bitter rivals.
He said: “His whole family hates Manchester United”.
Ten Hag has several names on his shortlist, including Ajax winger Antony, who thrived under his leadership in the Eredivisie.
United are looking to secure a deal for the Brazilian this summer to avoid the risk of his value inflating after the 2022 World Cup.
Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves is also on the list and Ten Hag is said to be a big fan of the Portuguese.
And transfer boss Matt Judge has reportedly made an inquiry for a young Premier League forward, with the club interested in a younger alternative to Cristiano Ronaldo.
