MANCHESTER UNITED manager Erik ten Hag is yet to find his best team and has only five guaranteed starters so far this season.
So say former United stars Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves, who claim Ten Hag is still struggling to find the right mix for his team.
The pair agreed that no one but Lisandro Martinez, David de Gea, Diogo Dalot, Bruno Fernandes and Christian Eriksen will be promised a spot in the Dutchman’s starting XI.
Hargreaves tells BT sport: “Luke Shaw came into the team against Everton, [Victor] Lindelof came in the side, Casemiro came in the side. So he’s still trying to find the mix.
“You could argue that the only people who are guaranteed to really start are Martinez, De Gea, Dalot, Bruno [and] maybe Ericsen.
“But the rest of the positions are up for grabs, so I think there are auditions for those players so they can go ahead and play well.
“I think they have a great squad but I still think he’s going to get to know it. I think considering where they’ve been, he’s doing a good job. If they can get in the top four, I think they’ve had a hell of a season.”
Scholes believes Ten Hag has used Europa League games to rest some of his key players for the Premier League.
The 52-year-old made just a few changes against Omonia Nicossia on Thursday when Scott McTominay came off the bench to break the deadlock and hand his side a 1-0 win on the death toll.
Scholes added: “I think it’s very early days. As I said before, I still think he’s trying to find the right mix in his team.

“I think he’d almost like to rest a couple of his players at Thursday night’s games for Sundays.
“Because he’s not quite sure what his best team is, [he is] not very enthusiastic about the performance. The winning games, yes, but I don’t think he has the right mix of what he actually wants.
“I think he almost uses those games for practice as far as Premier League games go.
“See, it’s very difficult to predict which team he’ll pick with players resting, but he seems to be playing against his strongest team all the time and it was difficult to get the mix right.
“There were injuries too, it was difficult. But I think the signs are looking promising. The longer he plays, the more confident he becomes in his team.”
