Man Utd fans claim Upamecano would be benched for Phil Jones as they celebrate missing transfer after horror show

MANCHESTER UNITED fans claim even Phil Jones would keep Dayot Upamecano off the bench as her previous transfer had an Etihad nightmare.

Upamecano missed City’s second goal in a 3-0 win in the Champions League quarter-final first leg against Bayern Munich.

The France centre-back has previously been linked with United, Chelsea and Arsenal, as well as Real Madrid last year.

But Old Trafford fans celebrated missing him after Bayern’s bashing and insisted he wouldn’t even make United’s matchday squad.

One called the 24-year-old’s performance “disaster class” and another said the ex-RB Leipzig star would “never start” if he joined the Red Devils.

But this suggestion was the most damning: “Upamecano would keep the bench for Phil Jones if they played together for a Championship club.

“Guy fumbles under pressure. I swear his mistakes would get so much more scrutiny from pundits, media and fans if he were English.”

And when City outclassed the German champions, one fan argued: “He’s only made for the Bundesliga.”

Ex-England centre-back Jones, 31, has been a minor part-time player for the Red Devils in recent seasons, with injuries adding to some harsh criticism.

But there’s little even the best defender in the world could have done against City’s opener, a great curler from Rodri in the 27th minute.

Then came possibly Upamecano’s worst moment.

He was disowned by Jack Grealish, resulting in Erling Haaland crossing for Bernardo Silva to give Pep Guardiola’s men a 2-0 lead.

Haaland was soon too sharp for Bayern again and slipped in to complete the romp.

The top finisher now has 45 goals in all competitions – the all-time most goals by a Premier League player in a season.

And he’ll be smashing all sorts of Champions League numbers too, having already scored 34 goals in 24 games in Europe’s top club competition.
