Things didn’t get any better for United throughout the game.

And her performance was too painful to watch to club mascot Fred the Red.

Once he was captured with his head in his hands leaning against a goalpost.

He appeared to be the visual representation of how United supporters were feeling as boos echoed through the theater of dreams.

United’s cause was not helped by namesake scout and club star Fred, who had a nightmare in the middle of the park.

The Brazilian was at fault for Brighton’s second goal and was sent off early in the last third.

And fans on Twitter joked that Fred the Red would have done a better job than the midfielder that day.

A fan reacted under the published image B/R football: “You should have dressed Fred the Red instead of Fred the so-called midfielder.”

While another comforted the mascot, saying: “C’mon Fred, you happen to have the same name as the worst player on the pitch and it’s not your fault.”

A third quipped: “Fred has just realized that moving the goalposts won’t avert the inevitable for ManU!”

Fred the Red’s reaction was mild compared to the group of United fans who started fighting among themselves during the game.

The chaos on the pitch spread to the South Stand where two fans clashed for unknown reasons.

But the pair simmered after a brief period of wrestling that ended in an enemy standoff.

United’s terrible start to the season has seen boss Erik ten Hag make a surprise offer for former West Ham striker Marko Arnautovic.

The move has shocked fans and pundits alike, with club legend Gary Neville admitting he was speechless at the offer.
