Man Utd defender Phil Jones is wanted by Bordeaux in a shock transfer to replace ex-Arsenal captain Koscielny

According to reports, MANCHESTER UNITED defender Phil Jones is being lined up by Bordeaux to replace the exiled Laurent Koscienly.

36 year old veteran, who spent nine years at Arsenal before joining Bordeaux in 2019, found himself in the cold on the French side.

After a string of injuries, Koscienly was considered redundant compared to Bordeaux’s requirements and was also stripped of the captaincy.

There seems to be no way back to Bordeaux for former Gunners captain and club president Gerard Lopez admitting that they want to get rid of the star who has faltered in this month’s transfer window.

Koscienly is very understanding on this matter and likened his treatment to a ‘slap in the face.’

And now, to add insult to injury, the Ligue 1 outfit have identified former Koscienly and United rival Jones as his replacement, according to L’Equipe.

Girondins want to strengthen their squad after bringing Brazilian defensive midfielder Otavio to Atlético Mineiro on loan.

Plus, former Sunderland striker Josh Maja is on track to leave the club for a return to England and join Stoke City on loan – with a buy option included in the transfer, L’Equipe said more.

Although Jones had barely kicked a ball in his two years at Old Trafford due to injury, Bordeaux still had faith in his ability.

Jones makes first appearance for the Reds since 2020 against wolves at the beginning of the month to fill in the cunning Harry Maguire.

But the 29-year-old never missed a beat in the clash and was given a standing ovation by United followers though couldn’t stop Wolves from winning a stunning 1-0 win over the Reds.

The man he replaced that night, Maguire, was also full of praise for Jones after the game and said United’s media: “I think we’ve all seen Phil come back from two years out and he’s been brilliant playing.

“You know, I’m really happy to see him on the pitch.”
