Over the weekend, CEO Arnold had a startling encounter with anti-Glaser protesters at a Cheshire pub before the group went to his home.

And he spoke about Man Utd’s situation, telling fans the club have wasted £1bn and cannot upgrade their stadium or training ground without new investment.

Arnold was then also asked about Barcelona midfielder De Jong, who has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer.

Speaking about a video posted on social mediahe can be heard: “As a club we are doing everything we can to finalize the deal.

“I’ve been up for days trying to get it done, the money is there but there are things standing in our way that I can’t say.”

Man Utd finished sixth in the Premier League last season, missing out on Champions League qualification.

Angry fans gathered at a pub and planned to protest outside Arnold’s house that summer over the lack of signings.

Arnold, who replaced Ed Woodward on February 1, got wind of the meeting and went to the Boot Inn pub in Kelsall, Cheshire to buy drinks for fans to appease them.

But in a brutal assessment of the club’s state, he said: “We’ve been fucking burning money. We’ve spent a billion pounds on players, we’ve spent more than anyone in Europe.

“I’m not thrilled with where we are, it’s not easy and we need to fix that. You can’t go to our training ground and say ‘show me where these billion pounds are here’.

“I don’t think we’ve done well with the money we’ve spent in the past.

“We blew an enormous amount of money. Last year was a bloody nightmare. I hated every minute of it.”

And in a direct argument with Woodward, he added: “Do you want me to buy the players? Doesn’t that ring?

“For the future, for investing in a new stadium and stuff like that, for a £250m training ground, we have to do something, we have to attract investors.

“I need that to do what I want for the club – I need to have more money than I have now.”
