ERIK TEN HAG will mend the fortunes of struggling Manchester United pair Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford.
That’s the opinion of Matthijs de Ligt, Netherlands and Juventus centre-back, who played under his fellow Dutchman at Ajax.
The English duo of Maguire and Rashford had a terrible season at Old Trafford last season as the Red Devils finished sixth, with their lowest-ever points tally in a Premier League season.
But De Ligt reckons one of United’s new boss’s greatest strengths is getting the best out of underperforming players to turn them back to the top tier.
The 22-year-old defender said: “Erik is someone who loves his job and he loves to work.
“He definitely improves the players. He really goes into detail. That makes him a really good coach.
“He wants to do everything to make his team play better.”
Can Ten Hag succeed at United? De Ligt, who reached the Champions League semi-finals with the Dutch manager in 2019, replied: “Of course. He has many qualities. We’ll have to see how he’s doing.”
Another Dutch star, Daley Blind, also backed 52-year-old Ten Hag to make a big impact at his former club.
Ajax star Blind, who played for United between 2014 and 2018, said: “He is very sociable and knows that everyone at the club is important.

“Everyone has to be involved to get that winning feeling and that mentality.
“Everyone has to point in the same direction. He is also a control freak and always wants to keep an overview.
“He’s a manager who loves to play attacking football, which Manchester stands for. He knows what he wants and I am confident that he will be successful.”
United’s summer transfer target Frenkie de Jong played a key role along with De Ligt as the Netherlands clinched a late 2-1 Nations League win in Wales on Wednesday night.
Midfielder De Jong, valued at £70m by Barcelona, showed why he is so highly rated with a 50-yard run ahead of Wout Weghorst’s injury-time winner.
De Ligt said: “Frenkie is a great player and everyone knows how important he is to the team.”
But when asked if the 25-year-old has hinted at where his future might lie, the defender said: “He hasn’t said anything.”
De Ligt will be reunited with Aaron Ramsey for pre-season at Juve.
And he hopes they will meet at the World Cup in Qatar as the Netherlands and Wales could be opponents in the Round of 16 if both progress through their groups.
De Ligt said: “I was very happy for him that he qualified for the World Cup.
“Maybe we’ll face him. It would be really nice.”
