RALF RANGNICK’S decision to substitute Mason Greenwood for Bruno Fernandes during Manchester United’s defeat to Wolves was met with boos from the fans.

The 20-year-old was one of the Reds’ best players at Old Trafford on Monday, but was stuck in the 60th minute for the Portuguese midfielder.

With the score 0-0 at the time of substitution, the Red Devils fans were furious when they ran after a goal to win the match.

Boos rang out around the Theater of Dreams as Greenwood’s No11 jersey was revealed by the fourth official.

Fernandes will continue to create an easy chance as he hits the bar from close range, before Joao Moutinho won the late game for the Midlands outfit.

The result leaves United in 7th place – 4 points behind fourth-placed Arsenal before their matches against Aston Villa.

Rangnick was asked about his decision to leave Greenwood in his post-match interview, where he stated he did not want to withdraw central midfielders Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic.

That is despite the fact that both were dominated by Moutinho and Ruben Neves in the middle of the field.

And the German military leader also said that he wanted to keep striker Edinson Cavani to stay.

He told Sky Sports: “It was 0-0 and we had better moments in that part of the game so we decided to bring Bruno on.

“He had a great opportunity to give us a 1-0 lead.

“Mason was good but I had to get rid of someone and we didn’t want to take one of our six.

“So the question was should I quit Edi or Mason and I decided to quit Mason.”

Rangnick was also criticized by experts Jamie Redknapp in accusing him of ‘making the system’.

He commented: “We talk about managers coming into the game and he comes in with this famous 4-2-2-2 system – it just doesn’t work.

“When you come here, you have to have the right players, no matter what system you play.

“Then he played three in the back, today he played 4-4-2 and in the end I think he was creating the system.

“There’s no real identity of how they’re trying to play.”
