MANCHESTER UNITED have taken a fresh blow in the battle for Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong.
The highly-rated midfielder has been a target of Erik Ten Hag since the 52-year-old’s appointment.
However, the Dutchman is considering staying at the Nou Camp where coach Xavi aims to take them back to the top of La Liga.
Still, the Catalan side are believed to be ready to sell the 25-year-old as they continue to deal with their financial woes.
The Netherlands international, who joined Barcelona for £77million in 2019, has drawn interest from both Manchester sides but an inability to guarantee first-team football puts Pep Guardiola’s side in an unlikely position.
However, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, the Red Devils have been left out in the rain while De Jong continues to assess his options going forward.
Romano tweeted: “Manchester United wanted to start direct talks with Barça for Frenkie de Jong as they believe there is a chance to sign him due to Barcelona’s financial situation.
“There are no player updates at the moment. Man United are waiting – they hope Frenkie changes his mind.”
The Dutchman could be on the move as Barcelona look to secure the high-profile signing of Robert Lewandowski, who is looking to end his tenure at Bayern Munich.
Meanwhile, former Ajax head coach Ten Hag is keen to start rebuilding Utd as they bid farewell to the likes of Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani and Jesse Lingard.
