In the record-breaking defeat, the away team conceded six goals in an unbelievable second half.

But away-end United fans who didn’t leave early were full-time sympathetic.

Fans clapped to players who passed after the game, which was a surprising reaction given the score.

United assistant manager Steve McClaren was among those who got the players to face the away game full-time before the shocked players headed to the dressing room.

While Raphael Varane took a more energetic approach and was caught on camera yelling at his teammates to go and clap the fans.

But those who didn’t leave the away game early reacted positively, despite United’s outright surrender in the second 45.

Their reaction reflects the positive mood that had gripped the club before this extraordinary defeat.

It was just seven days before United won their first trophy under Erik ten Hag and it was whispered about by the quadruple.

United legends Gary Neville and Roy Keane didn’t hold back as they reacted to the shocking result.

And Bruno Fernandes in particular was criticized for his performance.
