But the 24-year-old has just one year left on his contract at the San Siro and is yet to sign a new contract.

And reports in the Algerian press suggest the player is unhappy at having lost his place in Milan’s starting XI to Frank Kessie and Sandro Tonali.

As such, Old Trafford officials are said to have spoken to their Milan counterparts about Bennacer.

Man Utd were interested in him two years ago.

Milan want £43m for Bennacer but may have to accept less.

New Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag wants new central midfielders with Paul Pogba on the verge of Juventus return.

Bennacer was close to leaving Milan last summer but sporting director Paolo Maldini convinced him to stay but he will let him go in this window.

Bennacer, crowned 40 times by his country, began his career with French hometown club Arles.

Arsenal signed him in 2015 but he has only made one senior appearance for the Gunners.

He then played for Empoli and helped them win promotion to Serie A before Milan paid £14million for him three years ago.

United are said to be ready to offer him more than the £3million-a-year contract he has at Milan.

Man Utd are also keen on Frenkie de Jong and Christian Eriksen.
