Man Utd are inquiring about Portugal striker Goncalo Ramos, who is targeting three World Cup stars in the January transfer window

MANCHESTER UNITED are reportedly set to inquire about the availability of Portuguese ace Goncalo Ramos after the 2022 World Cup.

Ramos has featured 14 goals and six assists in 21 games for Benfica this season and netted a hat-trick for Portugal in the round of 16 against Switzerland.

According to ESPN, United will try to swoop in for the forward in the January transfer window but a deal is far from certain.

Coach Erik ten Hag is looking for a new centre-forward after the dramatic departure of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo has been axed with immediate effect following his bombshell interview in which he smashed the club from head to toe.

Ramos is seen as a suitable replacement and proved that as he replaced the five-time Ballon d’Or winners against Switzerland and guided Portugal to the quarter-finals after a 6-1 win.

SunSport reported that United were eyeing the Portugal international ahead of Ronaldo’s shock exit and competition from Newcastle and Bayern Munich.

However, Ten Hag has been told a striker is unlikely to move to Old Trafford next month.

This is due to significant budget constraints that have emerged as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and a costly transfer deal over the summer.

United are also keeping tabs on Dutchman Cody Gakpo, as well as Ramos’ Portuguese team-mates Rafael Leao and Joao Felix.

However, all of them come with a hefty price tag that has increased significantly following their World Cup exploits.

Benfica were ready to sell Ramos for just €20m (£17m) before the start of the season but his price has now increased dramatically.

PSV Eindhoven star Cody Gakpo’s value has almost doubled to €30m (£26m) as he is now worth at least €50m (£43m).

Atletico Madrid star Felix was made available by the Spanish giants following his falling out with manager Diego Simeone but is still priced at €100m (£89m).

United have considered signing the striker from Atletico on loan in January with an end-of-season deal.
