Man leaves without paycheck and can’t pay bills after bank freezes his account

A man who has no money and cannot pay bill when his bank account was frozen without warning.

The 54-year-old South African man, who wished to remain anonymous, moved to the UK in August from Bermuda for work.

Many immigrants struggle to open their doors normally Current account because these usually require a residency of at least three months in the UK.

But the workaround is to open a crypto account, a no-frills form of bank account that allows users to keep their cash and receive or pay.

He opened a store with a company called Suits Me, which also offers users debit cards.

Everything was fine until December 1, when the account was blocked by Suits Me – something the man only realized when he tried to pay for something and the payment was declined.

Crypto accounts are a necessity for many recent UK immigrants as checking accounts are difficult to open.

“When contacting their call center, I was told compliance has locked the account and I should wait for them to contact me via email,” he said.

“They wouldn’t tell me any reason and refused to let me talk about compliance so I could resolve what I thought was an account misunderstanding.

“I got my salary into it and the direct debits are going out, some of which are currently unpaid.

“It’s my only source of income. I have a family to support and it’s just before Christmas . I’m exhausted and have sleepless nights. All they need to do is pick up the phone and I’ll answer all of their questions. ”

Mirror reported to Suits Me on December 6 and the man’s account was contacted by the company’s compliance department a few hours later – and the account was unblocked.

However, Suits Me declined to comment.

Just last week, The Mirror reported that a Monzo customer’s account was also frozen in blue – just a month after he opened it.

The client, Bobby, 37, opened a checking account with Monzo at the end of October.

He chose Monzo because the bank had previously told him that he could use his account to trade cryptocurrencies, something many people don’t like. Bank do not allow.

Monzo online bank says closures unrelated to electronic money – but it must be investigated anyway.

But a month later, on 24 November, Monzo locked his account, which had £1,500 at the time.

Bobby said he spoke with Monzo, who would not say why it was blocking it or give a timeline of how long it would take to investigate and reopen it.

After The Mirror intervened, Monzo reopened his account on November 30 – but said it had nothing to do with crypto.
