Man City vs Newcastle Prediction | Premier League | 04/03/2023

The race for the Premier League (PL) title intensifies as reigning champions Manchester City keep the pressure on leaders Arsenal after a convincing 4-1 win at Bournemouth last weekend. After a comfortable 3-0 FA Cup triumph over Bristol City, Man City manager Pep Guardiola – who has recently plagued Manchester United’s spending – is keen to further boost his side’s momentum with a win over Newcastle, the richest club in the PL United .

City remain in the title hunt, although their current tally of 55 after 25 games is the lowest in all but one of their previous five PL campaigns with the one exception (2019/20), which notably was the only one in which they did didn’t raise the trophy. Historical trends will likely be Guardiola’s last as he prepares to face a side who have beaten City in 13 consecutive PL-H2H home games, while another win here sets a joint record for longest home win against a single opponent would compete!

This is a very different Newcastle side to many of those City have encountered over the years, as evidenced by Newcastle’s charge for UEFA Champions League places this season. The Magpies narrowly missed out on a League Cup win after a 2-0 final defeat by Manchester United at Wembley last weekend, although their form in the PL has been rock solid as they currently have eight away games (W4 L4) as their longest unbeaten had such a PL run!

Eddie Howe’s rejuvenated side also broke a competitive six-game H2H run in a 3-3 draw with City in August 2022 and with no side conceding fewer goals in their PL trips to date (seven), Newcastle will likely to provide stiff resistance again. Only time will tell if the visitors are still reeling from missing silverware as they strive to close a five-point gap with fourth-placed Tottenham last weekend.

Players to watch: Phil Foden is in red-hot form and has scored four goals from City’s last two games (G3, A1) but Miguel Almirón could be the one to watch early on given his three goals at Newcastle’s last five PL away games all came before half-time.

Hot stats: Manchester City have scored in their last 28 PL games against Newcastle – the combined longest streak by one side to score against another in the history of the competition.

Forecast: Manchester City (3) vs. (2) Newcastle
