A Los Angeles man was charged Monday with murder and other charges stemming from the shooting of Jacqueline Avant, wife of music executive Clarence Avant, during a robbery at the couple’s Trousdale Estates home couple in Beverly Hills.
Aariel Maynor, 29, is expected to be booked Tuesday at Airport Branch court on one count of murder, attempted murder and felony possession of a firearm, along with two counts of burglary residential burglary with one person present, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
The criminal complaint also includes an allegation that Maynor used an assault long-barreled pistol in the crimes.
Maynor allegedly shot and killed Jacqueline Avant, 81, at around 2:25 a.m. in her home in the 1100 block of Maytor Place.
He also allegedly shot a security guard – who was not injured – during the robbery, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
Maynor was arrested after allegedly accidentally shooting herself while breaking into a home in the 6000 block of Graciosa Drive in the Hollywood Hills, about an hour after Avant was shot, authorities said.
Los Angeles police who responded to that call found Maynor at the scene with a gunshot wound to the leg that appeared to have been unintentionally self-inflicted, Beverly Hills Police Chief Mark Stainbrook said.
The sheriff said Los Angeles police were in contact with Beverly Hills police, and detectives were “collecting evidence linking Maynor” to Avant’s shooting. . Stainbrook said Maynor is on parole and has a ”dense’ criminal record, which prevents him from possessing a weapon.

According to court records, Maynor did not contest domestic violence charges in July 2013 and was placed on probation, but later that year he did not contest robbery charges and was sentenced to five years in prison. He also has a major burglary conviction from 2010, according to court records.
Stainbrook said: “The evidence to date suggests that there is only one suspect involved in the crime and motives are still being investigated.
Video from the Avant’s home on Wednesday morning shows a broken sliding glass door, indicating a break-in.
“Our focus has shifted from finding a suspect to an investigation that continues to lead to a successful prosecution,” Stainbrook said.
Avant died at the hospital after the shooting. Clarence Avant, 90, was uninjured.

Clarence Avant is known as the Godfather of Black Music, and is regularly celebrated by artists such as Jay-Z and Diddy, LA Reid and Babyface. He started out as a talent manager in the 1950s, working at Venture Records in Southern California and founding LA-based Sussex Records and Avant Garde Broadcasting.
He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in October.
Jacqueline Avant served as president of Neighbors of Watts, a support group focused on childcare. She also serves on the board of directors for UCLA’s Center for International Students. She is also a board member of the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts.

Jacqueline and Clarence Avant have two grown children – Nicole and Alexander. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said Jacqueline Avant is a longtime friend.
