Man, 33, charged with murder of OAP, 86, found dead next to severely injured husband

DETECTIVES has charged a man with brutal murder against a pensioner and attempted murder of her husband in their own home.

Vasile Culea, 33, was charged after Freda Walker, 86, was found dead in her 50-year-old home while her husband Kenneth, 88, remained in hospital with threatening injuries live.

Culea has been charged with murder and attempted murder following violence in Langwith Junction, Derbys on Saturday morning.

He was arrested at a home in Warsop, Nottinghamshire, five days after the brutal attack.

Forensic officers can be seen going to and from the property while officers stand guard outside and a blue Audi A4 is towed on a lorry.

Assistant Sheriff Constable Dave Kirby, of Derbyshire Police, called the killing “an act of appalling cowardice”.

Cuela has been detained and will appear at Nottingham Magistrates Court tomorrow.

Kenneth, a retired miner and former Bolsover County Councilmember, remains in hospital in critical condition.

The pair have been described as “lovely people” who are “popular” in the local area.

Kenneth, a retired mining safety inspector, was celebrating her 88th birthday a week before the brutal attack.

Bolsover MP Mark Fletcher paid tribute to the former Bolsover mayor and his wife, saying his “thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time”.

Devotions have poured in from heartbroken neighbors in the “tight” community.

Flowers were placed outside the couple’s home, with a touching inscription: “To a lovely woman who can help anyone she can.”

A local resident said: “Ken and Freda were devoted to each other. This shocked everyone who knew them.”

ACC David Kirby said: “I would like to thank everyone who has come and assisted with the investigation so far.

“The incident had an understandable impact on the community of Langwith Junction and the wider Shirebrook area.

“Our thoughts remain with the couple’s family and friends – and I, along with the entire Derbyshire Constituent, send our best wishes to Ken.

“While today’s allegation is clearly positive news and one that I hope provides some degree of reassurance, the investigation into the incident continues and I will once again appeal to any Does anyone have any information to give.
