Makeshift memorial rises at Sondheim Theater after Broadway legend dies aged 91

NEW YORK (WABC) – The Broadway League says a special event will be held at noon in Times Square on Sunday to honor the legend. Broadway composer Stephen Sondheim, died Friday at age 91.

Fans left flowers and candles outside the theater named after him on West 43rd Street.

Sondheim wrote the music and lyrics for some of the most beloved musicals of the 20th century, including ‘West Side Story,’ ‘Sweeney Todd,’ and ‘Company.’

On Friday night, the ‘Company’ director and cast spoke to Sondheim about the passing before performing.

“The theater has lost one of its greatest geniuses and the world has lost one of its greatest and most original writers. Sadly, now there is a giant in the sky. But the Stephen Sondheim’s brilliance will remain here as his legendary anthems and the shows will continue to perform,” producer Cameron Mackintosh wrote in a statement.
