Magic The Gathering Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty Preview Guide

Looks like there hasn’t been five minutes since we went back to Innistrad for Crimson Vow’s preview, but it’s time to watch the sequel Collecting Magic the set, Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty. This Japanese-inspired cyberpunk world is the first sci-fi series Magic has ever made, so we didn’t know what to expect.

The preview (unofficially known as the “Spoiler Season”) is the period prior to the release of a set of Spells, where information and cards from that set are revealed.

Each preview lasts about a week and is marked with a pre-recorded reveal stream. This stream sets the tone for the preview and usually features the main mechanics of the set and the designers interviewing along with some new cards.

After that, Wizards of the Coast will generally transfer power to the community. Over the next week, various community members and media outlets will reveal almost every card in the deck. Not only does it turn a new set into a community-focused event, which is great, but it also means new cards will be revealed almost all day, every day of the season.

As mentioned, the preview seasons kick off with the main reveal from Wizards of the Coast. This is a pre-recorded event to reveal more information about the set than we’ve had before, including new or old main cards and mechanics.

The Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty live stream begins at 5PM GMT on Thursday, January 27 and is streamed via the official Twitch and Youtube channels. This time it was hosted by Becca Scott and B. Dave Walters, who you might know better about his work on tabletop RPG content like Dimension 20, Into the Motherlands and G4 TV’s Party Invitation.

Even though the reveal stream is official starting the preview season, Wizards decided to do something different with Neon Dynasty and released its whole story online before the set was even revealed. That means we already know the main names and faces, as well as a lot of the film’s art.

TheGamer will give daily updates to every card revealed during the preview season, but there are some other great ways to stay tuned.

The first is through Magic’s official website. These tend to update a day or so after the reveal, but are by far the most comprehensive and high quality card collection revealed.

If you want something that updates more often, MTGG GoldfishPreview’s range is also very good. They provide detailed information on how well each card performed in the game and provide a full translation of each revealed card in a language other than English.

Many players seem to think the previews are some sort of sponsorship or paid endorsement of Wizards of the Coast, so it’s worth mentioning what happens before these cards are revealed.

A few weeks before the preview begins, Wizards of the Coast will be reaching out to the creators. Sometimes this is through a PR agency, while other times it may be in person. They will ask the creator if they want to preview the card, and once they agree to the embargo, an email with a scan of the card will be sent. Sometimes there can be more than one, depending on the socket and the cards themselves.

Since you’re likely to hear a lot from the creators throughout the season, here it is free previews. Wizards of the Coast doesn’t pay anyone to make them; With so many creators hoping to get a preview card for each set, why would they? This is a neat way to bring the community to each creator in a short time, while also getting some promotional info for the upcoming movie.

We think it will be Extremely in March, but the news has already set has been postponed in the second half of 2022 has skewed the schedule a bit.

We hope the next preview season will be for Streets of New Capenna. Since that series is scheduled to premiere in early May, the preview season will be around mid-April, a few weeks before its premiere.
