However, they are still celebrating after securing sixth place and Europa League football next season.

Midfield duo Mac Allister, 24, and Caicedo, 21, have both played key roles in that success and are signed by numerous top clubs.

And their manager is content to lose the pair once the transfer window reopens.

After the Villa defeat, De Zerbi said: “I think it could be Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo’s last game.

“I think it’s right that they can leave, change teams and play at a higher level.”

Mac Allister cried after the defeat at Villa after what appeared to be his last game for the club.

Following his glorious World Cup victories with Argentina, he has been linked with a number of top clubs.

The 24-year-old has long been linked with a move to Liverpool and is said to be close to completing his transfer to Merseyside.

It has also been reported that Chelsea are interested in the midfielder but without European football it could be difficult to sign him while Man City have reportedly joined in the hunt for him.

Mac Allister has scored ten goals and assisted two more in La Liga this season and is likely to demand a hefty transfer fee when he leaves Brighton as his contract does not expire until 2025.

Ecuadorian Caicedo helped the Seagulls win the Europa League after a 1-1 draw with Manchester City on Wednesday night.

He was heavily linked with a move to Arsenal in the January transfer window but Brighton stuck by their man.

He then struck a new deal to keep him on the South Coast through 2027. However, he is still expected to leave Brighton at the end of the season as both Chelsea and Arsenal gravitate towards his signing.
