Nunez is tasked with replacing the outgoing Sadio Mane, who is on the verge of a move to Bayern Munich.

The 11-cap Uruguayan star will spearhead a revamped Reds lineup featuring the likes of Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, Roberto Firmino, Harvey Elliott and colleague Fabio Carvalho.

And his international team-mate Suarez – a fan favorite at Anfield – was quick to congratulate Nunez… and challenge him in the process.

Nunez had previously taken to Instagram to share a photo of himself outside Liverpool’s training center with the caption: “Always Uruguayan”.

Suarez, a veteran with 132 caps in Uruguay, replied kindly: “I was first but I hope you’re first to score.”

Nunez kept the love going, writing back, “It makes me proud to follow in your footsteps.

“I hope to perform like I did in Liverpool.”

Suarez scored 82 goals in just 133 games for the Reds during his three-and-a-half-year stint, including 69 goals in the Premier League.

He was the first Uruguayan to play for Liverpool, joined six months later by Sporting Lisbon defender Sebastian Coates.

Coates made just 15 appearances in the Premier League during his four-year stint, during which time he was loaned out to Nacional and Sunderland but scored a thunderbolt with a scissor strike against QPR in 2012.

Nunez is the third Uruguayan to don the famous Liverpool red.

And he’s coming back after a hot season for Benfica.

Nunez has struck 34 times in 41 games in all competitions, including six goals in ten Champions League games.

Two of those faced the Reds in the quarter-finals of the competitions, eventually winning 6-4 by Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Since those games, Virgil van Dijk has shown that Nunez is among the top five center forwards he has ever faced.

On that basis alone, Kop supporters should be confident that Nunez will eclipse Suarez’s goals for the club.
