LPGA Tour returns to Southwest Florida for the first time in decades

The Women’s Professional Golf Association is returning to Southwest Florida for the first time in more than 40 years.

On Friday, some of the world’s top golfers will be at the Crown Colony Golf & Country Club. Two of the golfers actually call SWFL home, and they spoke to WINK News about what playing here means to them.

Best if the best in women’s golf are teeing off in Southwest Florida. The LPGA is returning to the area after a decades-long absence. These women are carrying the Drive On championship for Crown Colony Golf & Country Club.

And golf fans in Lee County are quite excited to witness world-class golfers right in their backyard. Mark Watts said that watching these golfers left him stunned. “I wanted to throw my stick away most of the time because they also hit it through the trap with an iron. And how am I?! ‘ said Mark.

And not just any fan is allowed in to watch these golfers. Only club members are given the best seats in the house to watch some of the best golfers in the world.

“We could watch them tee off on hole eight right from our kitchen table,” said Terry Watts.

Not only can they view successful professionals of the course, but they can also view a few women who call Southwest Florida home.

Brooke Henderson grew up in Miromar Lakes, and Sophia Popov lived in Naples.

Henderson says she’s thrilled to be showcasing her talent in a place she loves. “It’s a great place to be at home in your own bed,” said Henderson.

And she hopes she gets the chance to do this more often. “It would be really great if we come back another year and we can have fans from outside. That would be really great. I think we’re going to get a very large crowd,” said Henderson.

Henderson believes it can only get better based on the support she’s seen so far.

Aside from club members, the only guests allowed in are those invited by the players. Saturday is the last day of the tournament.
