And although he was originally brought in as a backup option, he suffered a long-term muscle injury in training.
The injury should sit him out between three and four months.
However, the 26-year-old made a premature recovery and will now return to Liverpool.
Fabrizio Romano reported Arthur underwent a medical check which came back with a positive outlook.
He adds that new checks will be made in the coming days and weeks to keep tabs on his faster-than-expected recovery.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have struggled to gain momentum this season – the club sit sixth.
After a patchy start to the season that saw them fail to win any of their first three league games, they eventually managed to pull off a few victories before the streak ended abruptly.
Indeed, this has been an issue throughout Liverpool’s season as they have so far failed to win three straight league games.
But they will have a chance to rectify that when they face Aston Villa on Boxing Day.
Although newly appointed boss Unai Emery could upset the apple cart, having already caused an upset in his first game in charge against an in-form Manchester United.
Before returning to the Premier League, Liverpool took part in friendlies but in their clash with Lyon, talisman Mohamed Salah missed a penalty in a 3-1 defeat by Lyon.
