His family will be supporting him and Argentina from the stands of the Lusail Stadium during the historic game, but 10-year-old Thiago wanted to make sure his father received one last message of encouragement before stepping onto the pitch.
In a letter shared on social media by Messi’s wife Antonela Roccuzzo, the youngster quoted “Muchachos”, the Argentinean song sung by the PSG star and his national team-mates after their victory over Croatia on Tuesday.
The letter, written in Spanish, reads: “I was born in Argentina, the country of Diego [Maradona] and Lionel.
“Guys now we’re excited again, I want to win third place, I want to be world champion and we can see Diego from the sky with Don Diego and La Tota cheering on Lionel.”
The song – which contains the lyrics: ‘Ingleses putos de Malvinas no me olvido’ which roughly translates to ‘f***ing English in the Falklands, I don’t forget’. – became the most-played song in Argentina earlier this week after winning the semifinals.
The Sky Blue and Whites celebrated the win by singing the anti-English song in the dressing room.
Lisandro Martinez and Julian Alvarez, who play their football in England with Manchester United and City respectively, were there.
The duo’s involvement therefore upset many United and City fans.
