LIONEL MESSI has confirmed that Sunday’s final will be his LAST World Cup game.
The legend was at his best to help Argentina secure a place in the top flight after a 3-0 win over Croatia.
Messi picked up another Man of the Match award after scoring before setting up Julian Alvarez.
For Argentina’s third-place finish, the PSG star left football in awe after turning back the years to destroy Josko Gvardiol with a sensational run and cut back for the Manchester City man.
He will now play either Morocco or France in his second final and is close to becoming the all-time record holder at men’s World Championships.
As soon as he retires at Lusail Stadium, he will overtake Lothar Matthäus.
But the 35-year-old said it will be his 26th and final game at football’s greatest show.
He told Argentine media: “I am very happy to be able to achieve this, to end my World Cup journey by playing my last game in a final.
“It’s many years until the next one and I don’t think I’ll make it. And finishing like this is the best.”
Messi’s performance against Croatia sees him join Kylian Mbappe as the tournament’s top scorer with five goals while he is now firmly in the running for the Golden Ball.

His penalty against the 2018 finalists also overtook Gabriel Batistuta as Argentina’s top goalscorer at World Cups, giving him four goals in 100 internationals.
Despite breaking another record, Messi has his eye on the top prize.
He added: “It’s all well and good, but the most important thing is to be able to reach the group goal, which is the most beautiful thing of all.
“We’re just a step away from that after fighting hard and we’ll do everything we can to try and make it this time.”
