Paris Saint-Germain’s Lionel Messi and Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo were once again shortlisted for the FIFA Best Men’s Player award.
The duo are set to renew their rivalry once again over the prize pool they have dominated for nearly a decade and a half. The award was renamed from the FIFA Ballon d’Or to the FIFA Men’s Player of the Year in 2016, and since then there have been four different winners.
This year, Messi and Ronaldo are expected to face stiff competition from the likes of Mohamed Salah, Karim Benzema and Robert Lewandowski.
Lewandowski won this award in 2020 for his record season at Bayern Munich. The Polish star helped the Bavarian side win the treble in 2020 and deservedly won the FIFA Men’s Player of the Year award.
Salah and Benzema are expected to push Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi for the FIFA Best Men’s Player award
Both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi changed clubs over the summer, and have had mixed spells so far at Manchester United and PSG, respectively.
Despite having won the Copa America with Argentina, Lionel Messi has not been guaranteed the FIFA Best Men’s Player award this time due to the presence of a number of other talented players.
Mohamed Salah and Karim Benzema have been on fire this season. Salah’s 11 goals and 7 assists put him at the top of the Premier League goalscoring and assist charts.
Benzema also has similar success as 10 goals and 7 assists put him at the top of the scoring and assists chart in La Liga. Salah has also had five Champions League goals so far in the face of an opposition of quality, as Liverpool were held to a draw in the group of death.
Lewandowski is also controversial as the Poland international continues to score numerous goals in both the Bundesliga (14) and Champions League (8).
Names like Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland are also on the shortlist, but it’s unlikely they’ll win it unless they end the year strong.
Chelsea duo Jorginho and N’Golo Kante have also had good years, when their stats far outnumber goals scored. Jorginho played a key role in Chelsea’s Champions League victory and then helped Italy win Euro 2020.
