Lincoln’s Maguire explains why he celebrated in the face of Sunderland boss Johnson after scoring a hat-trick against his former club

WIND-UP businessman Chris Maguire created a ‘class in the restaurant’ by celebrating in the face of his former manager.

Winger Lincoln, 32, was released last summer by Sunderland with comedic style.

But on his return to the Stadium of Light, he scored a hat-trick in a stunning 3-1 win for the Imps.

And the Scotland international wearing two caps couldn’t resist rubbing it in the face of Black Cats coach Lee Johnson.

After a sweet opening goal in the 31st minute, Maguire initially looked as if he was going to apologize by raising his hand at his old home.

But then he dashed halfway up the pitch to scream at Johnson as his aging guard stood at the edge of his technical area.

Explaining his incredible celebration, Maguire said: “It’s the accumulation of everything.

“I think I’ve worked really hard during my time here – it didn’t end the way I wanted. I got a yellow card very early on and I looked over at him trying to send me off the pitch. .

“It worked in our favor – because at the end of the day he was put up in the tunnel.

“I can’t tell you what I said but I think I spoke on the pitch. It’s just been a bit of a tongue-in-cheek in my last six months here. It ended badly for me.

“I hope the Sunderland fans are okay with me. I got booed but I have nothing but admiration and respect for them. I love my time here.

“I don’t mean to disrespect them in the slightest. I hope they can see from my perspective how it ended up here for me.”

It’s no surprise that fans on Twitter are absolutely in love with elite-level taunts.

One said: “Chris Maguire will beat his old club tonight.”

‘OFFICE’

Another wrote: “This is the absolute box office take from Chris Maguire.”

The third added: “From the strike to no celebration to shouting at Lee Johnson, everything about this Chris Maguire clip is fantastic.”

And one last user commented: “Wonderful, simply amazing. Well made soccer toy, by Chris Maguire.”

Maguire, who escaped a red card for an early foul, added a penalty just before the hour mark and completed his treble with a fine finish with a quarter of an hour left.

It was the first hat-trick of the tournament scored in the net Johnson edge.

And to put that first for the former Bristol City manager, he was shown a red card for grabbing an opposing player by the throat in an angry melee as well as Maguire and actually got the last laugh.

Losing also solves a big blow to Sunderland’s promotion hopes when they couldn’t get past Rotherham at the top of League One – and the Millers had two games left.
