Lighthouse to Allow Visitors Again for Fitzgerald Memorial | Minnesota News

Each Nov. 10, the day the ship sank in a gale in 1975, the Cut up Rock Lighthouse simply south of Beaver Bay holds a beacon lighting. Lighthouse officers announce the names of all 29 sailors who died as a bell tolls, Minnesota Public Radio reported Sunday.

The lighthouse did not permit guests to attend final yr’s ceremony as a result of COVID-19 considerations. Individuals needed to hear by means of an internet livestream.

Lighthouse officers say this yr’s ceremony can be a hybrid, with the lighthouse grounds open to the general public and a livestream on the Minnesota Historic Society’s Fb and YouTube pages for individuals who can’t attend. The ceremony will start at 4:30 p.m.

“There’s one thing about being right here on-site and listening to the bell ring, and the names being learn off after which seeing the beacon turned on proper after that. There’s simply one thing very particular about that,” stated Hayes Scriven, the lighthouse web site supervisor. “It is only a solution to join with the previous and do not forget that Lake Superior is a fickle animal and you have to respect the facility, and never take it with no consideration.”
