Lewandowski scores twice in thriller Der Klassiker to extend Munich’s lead at the top of the Bundesliga table

ROBERT LEWANDOWSKI scored twice to help Bayern Munich stay 4 points ahead of the top of the Bundesliga table with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the Der Klassiker match.

Dortmund took the lead after just five minutes when England international Jude Bellingham made a smooth pass for Julian Brandt to cross and finish the home team’s net.

But the home team’s lead lasted only four minutes as Lewandowski – hot off his heels Ballon d’Or disappointed – level up everything.

Thomas Muller ran down a lazy Mats Hummels pass before the Polish striker collected a loose ball to shoot into the bottom corner of the goal.

That goal took Lewandowski to 26 goals for the season in just 21 games.

Bayern took the lead before half-time when another defensive combination in Dortmund’s back line allowed Kingsley Coman to hit goalkeeper Gregor Kobel through a deflected Hummels clearance.

Dortmund scored three minutes back in the second half when Bellingham again denied the offer, making way for Erling Haaland to score a superb equalizer for the home team – his 14th this season.

The home team then pressed for a goal but could not find a way through Bayern’s shaky defense.

And Dortmund paid the price in the 13th minute when Hummels – who had been through a nightmarish evening – let the ball hit his raised arm in the penalty area and the referee pointed to the dot.

Lewandowski remained calm to take the penalty despite Kobel’s handball in his 27th game.

Dortmund coach Marco Rose was later shown a second yellow card after arguing with officials over the award of the penalty.

Anger flared as Bellingham was accused of shoving Manuel Neuer while Dortmund grew increasingly frustrated.

But the defending Bundesliga champions kept their composure to see the game and beat their German rivals at the top of the table.
