This year, however, millions of US households with children are receiving IRS Letter 6419, and experts tell us it’s an important letter.
Between July and December, the IRS says more than 36 million households received monthly advances for the 2021 tax credit from children under the age of 17.
Those payments are part of a $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief plan signed by President Joe Biden last March.
“Realizing that this can be a little confusing, the IRS has launched a new website, the child-tax-credit-dot-gov website, where you can go into research on how much money you should have received, How much did you do? Get that letter and match that letter with what you actually get,” says Caroline Bruckner of American University, Kogod Center for Tax Policy.
The number on the letter must represent half of the amount a household is entitled to.

The other half could be claimed back in 2021 and no payments by January 2022.
