LEICESTER are close to completing the signing of Alex Smithies in what could become their first signing of the summer.
The Foxes are the only Premier League team not to have signed any new players during the summer transfer window and are likely to sack a number of fringe players to stay on their stars.
Corresponding Telegraph reporter John PercyBrendan Rodgers’ side will sign former Cardiff goalkeeper Smithies, 32, on a free transfer.
Leicester are hoping to make more additions before transfer deadline day as they plan to sell Boubakary Soumare and Jannik Vestergaard to raise funds.
Percy tweeted: “[Leicester] shy of her first signing of the summer – ex-Cardiff & Huddersfield goalkeeper Alex Smithies in talks over a move to a free transfer.
“The 32-year-old was recently in court [Bournemouth]. Leicester are hoping for more signings with the departure of players like Soumare & Vestergaard.”
Smithies has been a free agent since leaving Cardiff in June when his contract expired.
The 32-year-old started his career at Huddersfield in 2007 and made a total of 274 appearances before his departure in 2015.
The former England Under-19 international joined Queens Park Rangers and made 109 appearances before joining Cardiff in 2018.
The veteran goaltender made 100 appearances for the Bluebirds before his recent departure.

Leicester saw longtime star shot-stopper Kasper Schmeichel leave for Nice after a legendary 11-year stint with the Foxes.
Schmeichel recorded 478 appearances in all competitions at the King Power Stadium and was part of the famous underdog side that won the Premier League in 2016.
