“Always been a fan of Abba. Rest well sir and thanks for everything,” wrote one fan.

“So sad Lasse Wellander was my favorite!!!” another added.

A third wrote: “I’m so sad” with a sad emoji.

A statement released by Lasse’s family on Sunday said: “It is with indescribable sadness that we must announce that our beloved Lasse has passed away.

“Lasse recently fell ill with cancer which had spread and died surrounded by loved ones early on Good Friday.”

“We love and miss you so much,” they added.

His work was featured on 24 of the band’s recordings and he toured with Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad from 1975 to 1980.

After parting ways with ABBA in 1982, he collaborated with other artists.

Lasse worked on Mamma Mia! Movie soundtrack starring Meryl Streep and Piers Brosnan.

He released a series of solo albums, the first in 1981 and eleven more in the following years.

His last work was in 2021 where he helped create ABBA’s latest album Voyage.
