A POTENTIAL bomb alert at Los Angeles International Airport has caused shutdowns and traffic delays as police move around the departures level.
A suspicious vehicle prompted portions of LAX to close traffic around 4:30 p.m. local time while LAPD Bomb Squad responded to the scene.
LAX’s latest tweet update, sent just before 6pm local time, says officers are in the process of clearing the suspect vehicle.
“Vehicle traffic to the airport is very heavy so please allow extra time to get here this evening. Check your flight status as some flights may also be delayed,” LAX tweeted.
The airport’s official Twitter account also said that traffic in and around the airport is severely impacted as the airport’s upper departures level remains closed.
“All vehicle traffic to the airport is impacted due to the police investigation, including Century and Sepulveda.
“Shuttles are not currently running, not even from economy parking lots.
“Please allow additional time and check your flight status. We will provide updates as they become available.”
LAX officials said via Twitter that the investigation is ongoing and to stay away from the Tom Bradley International Terminal for the time being.
“Passengers will still have access to the departures area in most locations, but vehicle traffic will only be diverted to the lower level around police activity,” read another tweet from the airport.
Reports from passengers at LAX indicate that a Uhaul truck is reportedly under investigation.
Video footage captured at the airport shows hordes of passengers exiting the terminal.
