Putin’s invasion of Ukraine opened “gates of hell,” says Archbishop of Canterbury
Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby said Sunday Russia’s invasion of Ukraine had “opened the gates of hell” and unleashed “all evil” forces worldwide, from murder and rape in occupied territories to famine and debt in Africa and Europe .
Welby, the senior minister of the Anglican world communion, traveled to Ukraine late last month to meet church leaders and local Christians, as well as those displaced by the conflict.
He was impressed by the “size of the mass graves in Bucha, the photos of what was done to the people there, the rapes, the massacres, the torture by the Russian occupying power”.
And he said the effects of the invasion were being felt well beyond Ukraine’s borders.
“We’re practically in the same fight all of a sudden. When Ukraine was attacked by President (Vladimir) Putin’s decision, the gates of hell were opened and every evil force came out all over the world,” he told BBC television.
“I was in Mozambique the week before my visit to Ukraine, where there is famine all along the East African coast,” he said.
“There is inflation… there is an energy crisis, there is suffering, there is a shortage of drugs, all evil has been unleashed and until there is a disengagement and a truce we cannot make any progress towards reconciliation,” he added.
