Last war in Russia: ‘Putin responsible’ exposed for mass grave ‘genocide’ in town outside Kyiv

Pope Francis implicitly criticizes Putin for the first time because of Ukraine

Pope Francis came the closest he has come to implicitly criticizing President Vladimir Putin over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, saying on Saturday a “potentate” is fueling conflict for nationalist interests.

“From the east of Europe, from the land of the dawn, the dark shadows of war have now spread. We had thought that invasions of other countries, rampant street fighting and nuclear threats were grim reminders of a distant past,” the pope said in an address to Maltese officials after arriving in the Mediterranean island nation for a two-day visit.

“But the icy winds of war, which bring only death, destruction and hatred, have come down mightily on the lives of many and have affected all of us,” he said.

“Once again, a potentate sadly mired in anachronistic claims of nationalist interests provokes and fuels conflict, while ordinary people feel the need to build a future that will either be shared or not at all,” he said.

The Pope has already strongly condemned what he calls “unjustified aggression” and denounced “atrocities” in the war.

But he has only referred directly to Russia in prayer, for example during a special global event for peace on March 25.

“Now, on the night of war that descends on humanity, let’s not let the dream of peace fade away!” he said yesterday.
