Last Day to Apply for a $150 Fuel Card and $50 Transit Card – Do You Qualify?

TODAY is the last day that hundreds of thousands of Americans can apply for $150 prepaid fuel cards and $50 transit cards.

Qualifying Chicagoans have until July 1 to apply by mail for the cards, which are limited to train stations within the city of Chicago.

According to the Chicago Moves initiative, 50,000 gas cards and 100,000 public transport cards will be distributed, and 75% of the recipients will be residents who face major mobility difficulties.

The remaining 25% of the cards are distributed equally to each municipality citywide.

Applications for the Chicago-based program began April 27, and cards will be distributed each month from May through September.

The program offers a total of $12.5 million in transportation benefits.

How to apply

Lotteries are held to give away the cards.

The draws are conducted during the second week of each month from May to September.

To qualify for a monthly drawing, the city’s Office of Budget Management told The Sun that applications must be received in person or by mail by July 1, or no later than July 3 if submitted online.

Only one application will be accepted per person.

Chicagoans who miss the deadline can still claim gas card draws through September:

  • Personally: Any Chicago Public Library location

Who is Eligible?

  • residents of Chicago
  • Those who are at least 18 years old
  • Those who have a current and valid city sticker with correct shipping information for the vehicle (for fuel card applicants)
  • Individuals with household incomes equal to or less than 100% of the Area Median Income for Chicago.

Cards will be sent to your home address if selected, or you can choose to collect your card at City Hall.

If you are not selected in the July draw, you will automatically be entered into the next one.

The program, introduced by the city’s Mayor Lori Lightfoot, was narrowly passed by the Chicago City Council to relieve residents of the need to punish gas prices.
