Kevin de Bruyne backs Erling Haaland to topple Cristiano Ronaldo as Man City’s all-time top scorer after stunning start
KEVIN DE BRUYNE believes Erling Haaland could break the 800-goal barrier and become one of the all-time top scorers.
The Norwegian continued his sensational start at Manchester City by scoring in Thursday’s 3-2 Carabao Cup win over Liverpool – finishing 24th this season.
Despite only turning 22 in the summer, he has already scored 180 goals in 224 games.
KDB said: “He can probably go to 600, 700 or 800 if he stays fit and does the same things he does.”
Cristiano Ronaldo tops the all-time list with 819 goals, while his old rival Lionel Messi is not far behind with 793 goals.
However, De Bruyne – who bonded superbly with Haaland at Etihad – has already seen enough to believe his pal will end his career at such a company.
Midfielder De Bruyne added: “Erling is still a young boy enjoying life – but he takes football very seriously.
“He loves to score goals, that’s the most unique thing he has.
“It’s very hard to compare the forwards I’ve played with because they’re all completely different.
“Of course they play in the same position. But some are physical players – and some are speed demons who can score goals for fun.
“Erling hasn’t got there yet because of his age – but the others have all scored 300 or 400 points.
“He’s so obsessed with goals, he may be able to go beyond that.”
City have been very impressed with Haaland’s personality and quality since joining them from Borussia Dortmund in the summer.
But – ahead of the champion’s Prem trip to Elland Road tomorrow night – De Bruyne says the star has an edge that sets him apart and that’s why he’s destined for greatness.
KDB said: “Erling is a top striker.
“But he doesn’t take himself too seriously.
“When you talk about professional footballers or professional athletes, I think the best all have that extra little edge.
“A little something to become the best version you can.”
