Legendary gospel singer Keith “Wonderboy” Johnson has reportedly passed away at the age of 50.
The Brooklyn-born musician’s death was announced by Black Gospel Radio before being confirmed by heartbroken friends.
His cause of death has not yet been confirmed following his sudden death on Friday.
Singer-songwriter Keith rose to fame in 1998 after the release of his first gospel album Through the Storm.
The father of two earned the nickname “Wonderboy” at the tender age of five thanks to his stunning vocal abilities.
He had started performing with his father and uncles as a member of The Spiritual Voices before forging his solo career.
Friend and fellow artist Ted Winn shared a poignant tribute to the 50-year-old in an Instagram post.
He wrote: “I am in shock and in disbelief!! @keithwonderboyjohnson was an incredibly talented artist who always had a smile!
“My deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and everyone who loves him. #keithwonderboyjohnson.”
Gospel singer Titus Showers said the world has “lost a legend” as he spoke about their close relationship.
He wrote: “My brother and I have been spending quality time over Zoom during the pandemic serving and encouraging one another.
“What a blessing it was to spend this time together and learn more about each other.
“We’ve lost a legend with #keithwonderboyjohnson! I’m so glad we connected personally and I was able to give him his flowers before his untimely death!
“Heaven won the glorious sounds of the awesome @keithwonderboyjohnson!
“Prayers for the family, the music industry and all of its fans! #IJustwannaberight.”
Keith has released 14 solo projects over the years, eleven of which have earned a spot on the Billboard Gospel Albums chart.
His other works have also charted on the Independent Albums and Heatseekers charts.
The 50-year-old has also bagged six Stellar Awards and nominations for two Dove Awards during his illustrious career.
Keith is survived by his two children, Elyse and Brianna.
