Katastro star, 32, among 3 dead in horror car crash

ROCK star Andy Chaves died in a horror car crash on Thursday morning, his bandmates have confirmed.

The Katastro singer, 32, was one of three victims who died after a vehicle collided with roadside construction equipment on California’s North Pacific Highway.

Newport Beach police were reportedly called to the scene at around 12:45 a.m. where they unfortunately confirmed three deaths.

The quickly identified Chaves along with Crystal McCallum, 34, and Wayne Walter Swanson Jr., 40.

It was also reported that three road workers who were standing nearby when the collision occurred were taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

A Newport Beach Police Department statement said, “A three-person car traveling east on the PCH struck a curb in the median and then crashed into roadwork equipment.”

Chaves’ heartbroken band members confirmed his death in a statement on Instagram.

They said: “We are absolutely devastated to announce the loss of our brother and singer Andy Chaves.

“Please respect the privacy of Andy’s family and the members of the band as we all begin to process this. Thanks for the love and support.”

In response to the post, Dirty Heads vocalist and guitarist Dustin Bushnell wrote: “Love you guys. If you need anything at all, I’ll be there for you.”

Sublime with Rome also responded, saying, “Our prayers go out to you.”

Responding to the news on Twitter, one fan wrote: “I first heard your music at Red Rocks two weeks ago and even got a drumstick from the drummer. I came home cheered up and ready to see you guys in the OC with the fam. More than sad. Now I’m a perennial fan of yours. Rest in peace.”

A second added: “Absolutely devastating news… so sad to hear of Andy’s passing. Thanks for the music and great memories…RIP Andy Chaves.”

“Rep Andy Chaves @Katastro you are missed and your music will live on forever,” wrote a third.

According to Law Record, Katastro was formed by Chaves in 2007 along with drummer Andrew Stravers and guitarist Tanner Riccio.

They were later joined by bassist Ryan Weddle to complete the current line-up.

The band became famous for their eclectic mix of music with elements of rock, funk, blues and hip hop.

Her latest album Sucker was released in 2021, with plans for two release shows at the Marquee Theater next month.

They should also be on the road with Iration and Atmosphere for the summer.
