Josh Dallas talks about Manifesto season 4

Two-year time skip at the beginning of the season

While Dallas couldn’t reveal many details about the fourth season of the popular series, he did offer some hints on what we can expect in general and for his character. When asked how Ben is handling being a single parent, Dallas said “not very well.”

“We’re starting the next season two years where we left off with season 3. So we’ve come a long way,” Dallas said. “And Ben is an interesting, complicated character. He’s very unique in the way he thinks. And everything he does is absolutely for his family and for the love of his family and to protect his family. But because of this unique mindset he has, it can sometimes start to alienate the people closest to him. And often it’s his way or the Autobahn. And most of the time he’s right. But sometimes he’s wrong. It’s hard for him not to move through the world with a kind of blinders around his eyes.”

Ben’s “unique” mindset

The actor said he hasn’t gotten to the end of the story yet, but joked that he sometimes thinks Ben himself could be the group’s downfall because of his “unique” mindset.

“He always approaches things with good intentions, but is also willing to break the rules at times to get what he needs or wants to find out,” Dallas said. “And I think maybe for some reason he carries some level of guilt about what happened to them and the time he lost. And I think he wants to fix that and create something new with his family and loved ones in the now, but he’s going to be very, very unique.”

According to Dallas, the first part of the season will not be easy. Could that mean the first 10 episodes? We already know that the fourth and final season will have a total of 20 episodes that will be split. The Ben Stone actor confirmed they wrapped filming for the first half, are on a “little break” and will then get back to work.

“We are so grateful to be able to get back together and finish the story. But it’s also kind of bittersweet because it’s what I’ve loved so much for the last four years. And knowing that it’s finally coming to an end is both gratifying and sad at the same time,” Dallas said.

From landing permanently to taking off again

These mixed feelings are entirely justified. The emotions of the cast, crew, and fans went through all sorts of turmoil when the show’s parent network, NBC, decided to cancel the supernatural drama after its third season.

“It was so sad for all of us because when you’re on a TV show and a TV series like this that’s been going on for a while, you’re really immersed. You dive deep into these characters. You’re hooked, as are the audience, and you want to know. You want to do justice to the story and these characters,” Dallas said. “And the idea that maybe we couldn’t make it, or the idea that we’d never make it again because we got cancelled, was heartbreaking. But that’s the way it is in this business. Sometimes it takes a long time, sometimes it doesn’t work at all. And so you just roll with it. But we were sad to hear this news.”

Netflix initially didn’t save the show after NBC’s cancellation. When the network canceled the series in June 2021, the first two seasons of the Jeff Rake-created show were added to Netflix a few days later. The series immediately gained new fans and almost broke the record for holding the number one spot in Netflix’s top 10 list.

“It just kicked off and it was tremendously exciting and really empowering,” Dallas said. “And the fact that Netflix offered us to come back and finish the story was amazing.”

#SaveManifest campaign

The Manifesters never gave up hope. They eagerly pushed the #SaveManifest campaign, with Dallas in the pilot’s seat. And on 828 Day, we officially received the exciting news that the show was picked up by Netflix.

“From the bottom of my soul I thank our fans, our manifesters, for coming to save and support the show. We’re doing it for you, and we couldn’t do it without you,” Dallas said. “So we are eternally grateful and can’t wait for you to see what we have in store for you in these final 20 episodes. It will blow your mind.”

Dallas continued, “And you’ll see some interesting things from the characters you know and love. And some will see you in ways you’ve never seen them before. And of course we’re going to find out more and more about what happened to them and where they’ve been, and as we get closer to the finale, the end. It’s going to be a ride.”

Dallas’ directorial debut

And one of those episodes where we’re going to see the characters like never before is Episode 7. The seventh episode will also see them in a new situation that “sheds kind of a new light on some of our characters.” Exactly what that means we’ll have to wait to find out! The good news is that once the first half of the season is over, we won’t have to wait too long to see Dallas’ talent behind the scenes. In episode 7 he gets a place in the director’s chair.

“I was incredibly grateful for this opportunity,” Dallas said. “I feel like I’ve been in this business for a thousand years and I’ve wanted to do it for a long time. And I couldn’t have asked for a better directed episode with the best cast that made me look like a genius and made me look like I knew what I was doing. And I can’t wait for people to see it. I’m really, really proud of it.”

I mean, this charming guy is so talented on screen that I have absolutely no doubt that he will impress us with his work behind the camera too!

One thing that adds to his character’s charm is definitely Ben’s glasses, which have become a real obsession for fans! Dallas shared that it was a character choice he made early on in the series, and they’ve now become a part of Ben, “like a third arm.”

“I think they’re coming up later in the season,” Dallas said. “You’ll never be far from Ben Stone.”
