The Joint Base Andrew military facility was apparently locked down due to a security alert shortly after Vice President Kamala Harris left.
According to local reporters at the site of the base where Air Force One takes off, guards stopped a shuttle of reporters to inspect the van.
NPR White House Correspondent Scott Detrow said he had been told the base was closed “due to reports of an active gunman”.
Detrow and another reporter are in a shuttle van being held over the situation.
“The soldier who searched tells us this is a confirmed gunman but no shots were fired,” Detrow wrote.
“But again, that’s not an official statement from someone who just came in our shuttle.”
