Joe Joyce hires a speech coach with a British heavyweight desperate to talk his way into the Anthony Joshua blockbuster

JOE JOYCE is so keen on throwing trash talk into an argument with Anthony Joshua that he hires a speech coach.

The Putney fighter may be No. 1 in the WBO – but as Tyson Fury waits for the winner of Oleksandr Usyk’s AJ rematch on August 20, he’ll have a long time to wait for his title shot.

But after hopefully nailing Christian Hammer to the canvas at Wembley next Saturday, the next target is an all-English clash with his ex-pal and sparring partner.

Joyce, 36, told SunSport: “I’ve known Joshua for a long time and I know he’s a good guy and comes from a good place.

“For a long time he looked unbeatable and then it all fell apart with Andy Ruiz losing – and that must have been hard to come back from.

“He won the rematch with the backfoot and looked like he was scared of getting hit. He has a lot to prove.

“He never got in touch with me. I used to have his number and we met occasionally.

“But after losing Ruiz I tried to send him a nice message and I think he may have changed his number – or threw the phone in the sea.

“I still want to see him fight Fury but I’d also like a chance to fight him so hopefully he doesn’t retire before then.”

The pair completed hundreds of rounds together at their old Team GB base before Joshua, 32, won gold at London 2012 and Joyce silver at Rio 2016.

And Joyce lost to WBA, IBF, and WBO heavyweight champion Usyk in an amateur bout in 2013.

So few people are better placed to predict the outcome of their Saudi Arabian rematch.

Joyce gives his compatriot little chance of regaining his titles – making their clash more likely when Usyk and Fury decide who is the undisputed king.

Joshua dropped mentor Rob McCracken for American Robert Garcia and Joyce said: “AJ’s gotten a little weird lately.

“He’s a bit of a strange guy – he used to be different.

“Sometimes in sparring, he would come head-to-toe, head-to-toe and brandish bombs.

“It used to be very exciting and I used to love fighting with him like that.

“But all of a sudden he started working on his technique and using his footwork, being out of reach and stuff like that.

“He changed his style a bit and didn’t get cocky.

“Changing coaches can be difficult, but it depends on who you are as a person.

“If Joshua can absorb all the new information and tactics, it could be fine.

“But it can also take time to adapt and integrate into your sparring and your fight.

“I really hope he can win the rematch for the British fans and British boxing.

“Joshua has a chance. He showed how he can turn it around with the Ruiz rematch when he came in with a different tactic.

“He was competitive in the first Usyk fight and has good power.

“So if he can get it to Usyk like he should have in that first fight, he has a chance of a puncher.”

So why does 6ft 6in tall, granite-chinned Joyce suddenly shoot out her lip?

He revealed: “I have a talking trainer. He gives me some pointers and advice on what to do.

“It’s just a confidence thing, so I’ve got some practice to do.

“I like to keep my private life fairly private – I don’t feel the need to share too much.

“I’m feeling more comfortable and confident and now if I want these really big fights I have to pull my finger out and do more.”

Tickets for Joyce vs Hammer are available from AXS.com and Ticketmaster.co.uk from £55.
