First Lady Jill Biden introduces Vice President Kamala Harris as president of the United States.
During a celebration of Black History Month at the White House on Monday, she claimed she was joking after correcting herself.
She began with the introduction to the vice president.
“As many of you know, our vice president’s historic path to the White House began before she could walk, march with her parents in the Civil Rights movement, or at least especially being pushed in a trolley. Since then, she has dedicated her life to the pursuit of justice and opportunity for all,” she said. “She’s been Joe’s partner, especially on issues like voting rights, and is proud to be the first, but not the last.”
“Ladies and gentlemen, the president-vice president of the United States,” the first lady said.
Laughter echoed through the crowd including her husband.
“I just said it to make you laugh,” she said.
The event was attended by Fr. Jesse Jackson, MSNBC host, Fr. Al Sharpton, and members of the Black Caucus Congress including Rep. James C. Clyburn (DS.C.) and Rep. the others.
“Black history is American history. Black culture is American culture,” President Biden said in his speech.
Jill Biden also sent a message of support for Ukraine by wearing a mask depicting a sunflower, the country’s national flower.
